Our Rally and Lobby day could not be happening at a better time. State Representative Juan Candelaria recently introduced a bill to specifically help our families who have displaced by Hurricane Maria. His bill, HB 5082 “AN ACT PROVIDING FUNDS FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS FROM PUERTO RICO AND THE VIRGIN ISLANDS LIVING IN CONNECTICUT” would ask for $2.5 million to help families who were displaced by Hurricane Maria.
We will be working to ensure that this bill gets a public hearing in the Appropriations or other committees so that our community will have the opportunity to present it’s case before the legislature. If you believe our people deserve a time to speak and make our case heard, then please join us on Wednesday Feb 28th at 10am in room 310 of the Capitol Building in Hartford.
While details of the bill are still being worked out, money appropriated for this bill would go toward 3 areas:
1- School districts to bring on additional support staff
2- Non profits and resource centers who are currently providing services
3- Rental assistance for families who have found longer term housing but need transition assistance
We believe this bill is a great start to the conversation and we look forward to continuing that conversation at a public hearing.

If you can not join us on Wednesday, we are encouraging everyone to please call your representatives and express support for HB5082.
